Communications Essential to Making Successful Benefit Plan Changes

Communications are critical to successful benefit plan modification and change, according to a recent survey by Towers Perrin, a human resources consulting firm. Without effective messaging that helps employees understand not only the nature of the changes, but also what their response to the changes must be, employees can begin to feel that their employers do not care about them, which can negatively impact employee commitment and engagement.

Managing Cancer Costs in the Workplace

Cancer continues to rank as the leading cause of long-term disability claims (LTD), according to an annual review of Unum’s own disability claims. Of Unum’s 2006 claims, cancer accounted for 12.1% of claims, with breast, colon and prostate cancer being the most common.

Dental Plans with Rollover Feature Let Employees Retain Unused Benefits for Later Use

Imagine getting “paid back” for taking good care of your teeth. Some dental insurers are doing just that—or at least some version of it—for members of the group plans they offer, by allowing those who make regular visits to a dentist to roll over a portion of their annual benefit into subsequent years, which then could be used to finance more costly dental care.

How Cost-Conscious Are Doctors?

Health care cost containment requires a joint effort among all players in the health care system—patients, physicians and other health care providers, insurers, the government, and health care sponsors. As employers have experienced ever-rising health insurance premiums, and as patients/employees have seen higher out-of-pocket costs, more support is needed from the other players to ensure that unnecessary dollars are not being spent in the provision of quality care. A recent study suggests that physicians, in particular, may not be considering their patients’ out-of-pocket costs, especially when it comes to more expensive procedures.
